Musky

Average Life Span: 10 plus years
Average Mature Length: 40 inches
Average Adult Weight: 15-20 pounds

Musky require a deeper cooler water body. The smallest recommended Waterbody size for stocking musky is 4 acres, anything smaller than 4 acres will have very limited survival. They have a minimal chance of over populating.

Musky spawn mid April when the water temperatures reach the upper 40’s to lower 50 degrees.

They are a top predator fish and need live feed. They will feed on perch, suckers, golden shiners or anything else they have an appetite for.

Stocking suckers or golden shiners in your pond is an excellent option for forage for Musky.

Northern Pike

Average Life Span: 10 plus years
Average Mature Length: 35 plus inches
Average Adult Weight: 10-15 pounds

Require a deeper cooler water body. The smallest recommended water body size for stocking is 2 acres. Northern spawn in late March to early April. They begin as soon as the ice leaves and the water reaches 38 degrees or higher. They spawn in 2-4 feet of water over submerged vegetation. They have a limited chance of overpopulating.

They are the top predator and need live feed. They feed on just about any other fish that they have an appetite for. Northern are a good choice for stocking in water with a stunted panfish population.

Stocking suckers or golden shiners is an excellent forage options for Northern Pike.

Walleye

Average Life span: 8 plus years
Average Mature Length: 25 plus inches
Average Adult Weight: 4-7 pounds

Walleye do well in cooler deeper water. They do better in a 2 acre or larger water body.

Walleye spawn once per year in early to mid April when water temperatures reach 40-45 degrees. They have very limited natural reproduction.

The young walleye feed on zooplankton until they reach 1 ½-2 inches and then switch to live feed. They will feed on small fatheads, small bluegills, perch, or anything else small enough to eat. They generally feed in the early morning or late evening.

They are a good choice for keeping the panfish population in check.

Stocking fatheads is an excellent forage option for walleye.

Large Mouth Bass

Average Life Span: 7-9 years
Average Mature Length: 16-18 inches.
Average Adult Weight: 3-4 pounds

Does well in cool/warm water. In fact it is the only predator fish that does well in warm water.

They spawn once per year when the water temperature reaches 60 degrees or warmer. The male makes saucer shaped nests (12 plus inches wide) in 2-4 feet of water. The female lays her eggs and leaves and then the male guards the nest and fry.

The bass fry will feed on zooplankton and insects until they reach 1 ½ inches. They will then switch to live feed such as fatheads and other small fish. They are a fairly aggressive fish.

They are the #1 stocked predator fish to prevent or control panfish overpopulation.

Large Mouth Bass are commonly stocked with bluegill.

Stocking fatheads and golden shiners is an excellent forage option for Large Mouth Bass.

Small Mouth Bass

Average life span: 7-9 years
Average Mature Length: 16-18 inches
Average Adult Weight: 3-4 pounds

Requires deep cool water generally with sandy or gravel bottom, such as an old quarry. They will not tolerate the warm water like Large Mouth.

They spawn once per year in early to mid May when water temperatures reach 60 degrees or warmer. They generally lay their eggs in 2-3 feet of water on a sandy or rocky bottom. The males make saucer shaped nests the female then comes in and lays the eggs. She then leaves and the male stays behind to guard the nest until the eggs hatch and will continue to protect the fry.

Small Mouth feed on zooplankton and insects until they are 1 ½ inches long at which point they will switch to live feed such as fatheads and other small fish. Small Mouth Bass feed very aggressively and fight very hard.

Small mouths are a great predator fish to help control panfish population, if the water body is deep and the water is cool.

Stocking fatheads and golden shiners is an excellent forage option for Small Mouth Bass.

Straight Bluegill

Average Life Span: 6-8 years depending on water temperature and food availability
Average Mature Size: 9-10 inches
Average Adult Weight: 1 pound
Number 1 stocked fish in ponds.

Does well in cool to warm water.

They are very prolific breeders. They spawn 1-3 times per year, generally the first spawn will be in late May. They begin spawning when water temperatures reach 65-70 degrees. Females lay their eggs in shallow water in saucer shaped nests made by males. The female leaves and the nest is guarded by the male.

Can overpopulate easily. The best way to control this is by maintaining the right predator density or harvest levels.

Straight Bluegill feed on zooplankton, insects, and they do decent on artificial feed as well. Maintaining a good bluegill population in a pond with a predator fish population is a good choice. Reproduction from adult bluegills makes a good forage option for predator fish.

Gets along well with all other fish

Hybrid Bluegill

Average life span: 6-8 years depending of the food availability and water temperature.
Average Mature Size: 10-11 inches
Average Adult Weight: 1 pound

Does well in cool/warm water Generally stocked in smaller ponds. To replenish the aging population it is recommended to restock every 2-3 years.

Very limited reproduction. Approximately 90% are sterile males. The males make saucer shaped nests in shallow water. The female will lay eggs in the nest and it is then guarded by a sterile male. Less chance of overpopulation that Straight Bluegill.

More aggressive feeders than straight bluegills. They feed on zooplankton, insects, artificial feed. They are limited forage for predators, because of their rapid growth rate.

Produced by crossing a straight bluegill and green sunfish.

Get along well with all other fish. However they may eat the fry of other fish.

Perch

Average Life Span: 7-9 years
Average Mature length:
Females: 12-14 inches
Males: 8-10 inches
Average Adult Weight: 3/4- 1 ½ pounds

Perch tolerate a wide range of water temperatures, and they do well in any size pond.

They spawn one time per year in mid April when the water temperature reaches 45-50 degrees. They lay their eggs in ribbons usually suspended over structure in water bodies.

Perch feed on zooplankton, insects, small fatheads, and other small fish. Stocking fatheads is an excellent forage option for perch.

They get along very well with other fish.

Black Crappie

Average Life Span: 7-9 years depending on food availability and water temperature.
Average Mature Length: 10-12 inches
Average Adult Weight: 1-1 ½ pounds

Black Crappies do well in warm to cool water. The minimum recommended water body size is 2 acres.

They spawn once per year in early to mid May when water temperatures reach 60-65 degrees, and generally spawn in 3-6 feet of water.

Black crappies can overpopulate, but there is very little chance of this happening. They feed on zooplankton, insects, small fish and fatheads. Early morning/Late evening feeders.

Stocking fatheads is an excellent forage option for crappies.

Channel Catfish

For stocking in Wisconsin only.

Average Life Span: 7-9 years
Average Mature Length: 20 plus inches
Average Adult Weight: 4-8 pounds

They prefer warmer water temperatures. Catfish will spawn once per year in the first part of June when the water temperature reaches 70-75 degrees. They lay their eggs in a nest. Catfish prefer to spawn in something such as a culvert or other partially enclosed structure. Generally the fry have a very limited chance of survival. Catfish also have a very minimal chance of overpopulating. They do not reproduce and overpopulate a pond the way bullheads typically do.

Catfish generally feed on algae or on the pond bottom; they are an excellent option to help control the weeds and algae. They will also feed on zooplankton, insects, live fish, and dead fish. They generally feed in evening into the night.

They can be a predator so they can help control the panfish population.

Catfish get along decent with other fish.
